interest one this in that it wasn't close to water. I suspect it may have been after Partridge chicks as there was a Red Legged Partridge on the wall to my right

They'll eat pretty much anything they can get in their mouth...............

There's a bird of prey centre at Andover where they feed the wild hawks each evening by throwing out chicken carcasses. The local herons have cottoned on this this and fight the hawks for the food!
