The most complicated assignments I get as a photographer come from my wife.

We spent one day at Ravenna, about 75km from Ferrara. One of Ravenna’s highlights is the ivory throne of bishop Maximian (6th C. AD), in the Episcopal Museum. Very dark, and the scanty light was reflected by the perspex case in which it was exhibited.

I shot some fifteen pictures of it. This is one of my better efforts: the panel shows Christ entering Jerusalem.

Yes, the fashion of representing Christ as a (lean, bearded) hippie came later...
What makes this throne so extraordinary is the wealth of narrative scenes. Early Christian art is mostly symbolic, and if it isn’t its iconography is often derivative (from Greek/Roman mythology).
Here we find some highly original scenes from the bible, taken not only from the life of Christ, but also from the life of Joseph, Jacob’s son.

Strangely, we could find no monography on this masterpiece, and the available postcards only showed part of the panels.
