A charming and decidedly photogenic Pemón child happily pauses and smiles for my camera.
Canaima is the homeland of one of the largest Amerindian populations in Venezuela. The present Pemón tribes are of Carib origin who settled only about 300 years ago. Their population is more than 50,000, with about three quarters of these within the national park.
