Red dirt road
Road (on right hand side)....with pademelons (an inedible, bitter desert plant)..growing on the roadside. Desert Western Australia. We drove 200km on this road

(I used to think that red soils were fertile but this soil of iron oxide is obviously not appropriate for cultivation of crops without the essential rain ..)

The red soils can be amazing after rain....at this time of the year a small shower results a few days later in prolific carpets of delicate flowers....rapid to germinate and bloom. Most of the time, there is no rain at all, however. The plants depicted here grow in totally arid conditions. Deserts, though up to 50+ degrees in summer, can be cold at night...these plants grow on the slight dew after cold nights. The road is basically like red talcum powder.....have a good evening, Leonora xxxxx
