Old and New

Fascinating. Reminds me of the time they replace part of our Bay Bridge. The old one still standing after the new one was finished, then gradually being taken down, until there were just odd fragments hanging in the air.
Bridge into the past

Thank you, Sarah. Sadly, the old bridge here is also to be removed, though it has some historic significance as probably the last lifting bridge of its kind still in operation in Australia.

Too bad. Here they're often saving the old bridge for non-motorized traffic, which is a good way to make things safer for the bikes!

The main problem seems to be that the daily tourist boat needs the bridge lifted to get past. That would require ongoing maintenance etc. (Of course, the tourist boat could base itself upstream, or get one with a lower top deck....) I gather the new bridge will have a dedicated bike lane.

It's a shame that the old bridge has to be demolished. In Norway I have seen part of an old lift bridge being renovated and maintained as part of the heritage.

Oh wow!!! That is so cool!!! Love the pictures and visualizing all of the work going on to make it happen. What a momentous job. Reminds me of 1989 when the Loma Prieta earthquake hit San Francisco and knocked down part of the Bay Bridge, which is one of the three most important bridges connecting SF with the bay area (Golden Gate Bridge is the most famous important one). They had to repair the bridge as fast as they could because it was a traffic nightmare and total disaster for commerce for each day that it wasn't intact. I am old-fashioned, I guess, because the nostalgia for the old bridge soon to be taken down speaks much louder for me than the admittedly impressive modern structure of the new bridge. Still, it's been nice to follow the construction through the eyes of your camera, George.
