Desolation

Desolation
Through the (rather dirty) window of our city hotel in Christchurch. All these buildings have been derelict since the earthquake and are surrounded by exclusion fencing, cleared sites, and more shipping containers. Image by my lovely wife.

, Polyrus, , RHH and 5 other people have particularly liked this photo

A wonder there is still an old building standing! This will need quite a bit of strengthening...

Sadly, Bev, NZ is also known as "The Shaky Isles". These were the worst quakes in 80 years, but the active geology guarantees more.

What a series. We knew of the Christchurch earthquake but it's quite a reminder of the devastation and your pictures I've not seen before.

Thanks, Ron. I think the problem is that the media attention moves along but rarely looks back. We knew of the buildings destroyed at the time, but did not realise so many were damaged beyond further use and required demolition.

You are doing an admirable chronicling of the aftermath, George. I for one, had let the disaster slip from my mind and not appreciated there was still so much to do after almost five years!

Thanks, Neil. That was pretty much our perspective also. We were stunned to find our (fairly new) hotel in the centre of such devastation. I thought it useful to document the situation.
