The Royal Colony (or is that Chateau?)
The breeding colony of the Royal Penguins, a hundred or so metres inland from Sandy Bay. Parks Tasmania have constructed a walkway for tourists (this is the only place on the island, apart from the station area, where tourists are permitted). Note especially the tremendous devastation of dead and dying vegetation as a result of the massive rabbit infestation at that time (Dec 2005).

Switching back to Janet's Happy Channel, thanks for this neat picture of people visiting the penguins, I would LOVE to be one of those people!! When I was at the San Francisco Zoo, I spent quite a bit of time at their fantastic penguin exhibit. The birds are in bliss with a perfect environment for them, room to sun and cavities to live in, and an ENORMOUS moat to swim in. It's outstanding because they get everything they need, plus space from people, yet we can get quite close to them if they choose to be near. I loved the experience so much and if I could, I would visit often just to sit and watch them! Here is a link to my Zoo album, there are two penguin pictures, one on each of the album pages. www.ipernity.com/doc/290645/album/414789
