Arriving at Lord Howe Island by flying boat, 1974.

Arriving at Lord Howe Island by flying boat, 1974.
There were no aerobridges for flying boats! Arrival at Lord Howe Island by Sandringham involved going ashore in an open boat. Here the aircraft's Purser (they used nautical terminology), having tied the mooring line, watches from the front hatch as the passengers depart. The inset note shows the approach to the island, which is mainly National Park and has the world's most southerly fringing coral reef.

Flying boat enthusiasts might enjoy this video about flying boats at the island: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmTVKs15n4U

Thanks Rita. I worry sometimes that I write too much. :) But I think that images like this need the background.

After the Captain (and even then, only maybe), the Purser was very senior.

o0o only been on one flying boat ... the one I should have been on
crashed the day before ... sadly killing all three on board ... we were
late to take off ... no one would tell us why ... until we returned from
our trip ... (gulp) would we have gone on it ... I think not ;-) oOo

but I'm here to tell the tale ..;-)

Yes, sometimes it doesn't pay to know all the details, Bev. I think I can imagine your feelings. As you say though, you're here to tell the tale ... and, no doubt, have some good ones about that day.

o0o we were flown by an old Vietnam pilot in the end ... he won't mind me saying
old either ;-) he was delightful and a gentleman indeed ~ another story ;-)))) and
we did not fly over the Tongas National Park area because of the crash ... tragic,
and I think this is not the norm ... well, I have not heard of anymore crashing,
and the trip was spectacular ... I guess in our lives each and every day ... we
face dangers ... on the road ;-) and think nothing of it .. ;-) oOo

I bet this was a great way to travel - especially take-offs and landings!
tiabunna club has replied to Dave Hilditch
It was indeed, Dave. The take-offs and landings depended entirely on the state of the water. If it was choppy, it felt like driving down a very bumpy road, but if the water was smooth on landing there was almost no feeling of reaching the surface, just an increasing noise and retardation.

Thanks, Ian. Something you don't see any more: his other job was to tie to bow anchor line.

A great old photo, I am not sure I would be confident flying to the island after seeing all the mishaps they seemed to have in that era.
It must have been a great era to be around . Regards Peter

Thank you, Peter. There was only one crash there, a RAAF Catalina that was forced to attempt a landing by major problems. A number of other aircraft had problems while moored though. That said, these were THE way to travel compared to modern aircraft.
