donor memorial from the almshouses set up in 1596 by the spaniard balthasar sanchez. now in the collection at bruce castle museum. sanchez was born in jerez, became confectioner to philip 2 of spain, came to england in 1554 when philip married bloody mary, decided to stay and became protestant, and made enough money from sweeties to set up almshouses for 8 people on tottenham high street. he died in 1602, the almshouses came down c.1922 to be replaced by the non-eleemosynary sanchez house.
