goscombe john's 1903 memorial to arthur sullivan, which carries a quote from his yeomen of the guard opera written with gilbert (is life a boon?if so it must befall that death when'er he call must call too soon). the addition of the half naked mourner caused some fuss. (why, o nymph, o why display your beauty in such disarray? is it decent, is it just? to so conventional a bust?)
