there's an earlier one in the crypt at canterbury cathedral, there are plenty of animal musicians of all sorts on misericords up to the c16th and I know I've seen others both carved on corbels and in manuscripts; it's the sort of image that bernard of clairvaux famously railed against. on the continent it's seen as part of a carnival of the animals, a type of the world turned upside down, but elsewhere it's part of an attack upon music and dancing, seeing them as bestial occupations.
