there was already a newish church here when street began this one in 1873; one only 40 years old sits up the road. it is said that the earl was dicovered with the vicar's naked wife one day, he wearing only the duchess's hat, and barred him from his church, so the earl built a new one. well, it may not be true, but it's at least as likely as most stories of church foundations involving unknown saints an a lot more fun.
