in fact six barrows line the top of the ridge, visible for miles. two were excavated in 1866 by the duchess of berry, in exile from france, and were found to contain sitting skeletons, one male, one female, with antlers resting on each shoulder, a magical and evocative image. I hope that the other four retain similar occupants, sitting in protection of the empty wild valleys around here since the early bronze age.
