one of two heads reused to hold a screen at the eastern end of the feretory. the ice cream whorls of their hair seemingly tie these heads in with the famous chapter house figures from st,mary's abbey in york, especially that of moses: I know of nothing else similar. these heads both appear to originally have been column swallowers, and date from the late c12. by chance, the wall painting adjoining is of archbishop william of york, c.1330
