redgrave church crypt
The collapse of one of the marble slabs in the chancel under the feet of a soprano in a musical production of Quasimodo in september 2010 for the friends of the church revealed this passage to the vault under the vestry, with its collapsed lead coffins , one of which will be lord chief justice holt, who had evicted the original bacon occupants when he took their place in 1710. the hole was not big enough to access except with a camera whilst I was there, but a proper archeological investigation was carried out soon afterwards. many thanks to the redgrave church heritage trust for allowing access, and how wonderful to find so many people so enthusiastic about their redundant church. the english bond brickwork appears of c17 date with areas of c18 and c19 work.
