Perched atop her plinth at Custom House Quay, arms in a defiant skywards salute, stands Dolores Ibárruri, Communist heroine of the Spanish Civil War. Also known as La Pasionaria (The Passion Flower), Ibárruri was an inspirational orator, and her monument is inscribed with one of her most famous exhortations: “Better to die on your feet than live forever on your knees”.

Nació en Gallarta (Bizkaia), pueblo con minas de hierro, en una familia numerosa de mineros. Perdió 4 hijos. Sus padres eran cristianos devotos, ella hasta su casamiento. Fue activista de movimientos obreros, afiliada en la primera generación al partido Comunista, estuvo prisionera, luego experimentó el exilio en Moscú al restablecimiento de la democracia volvió como Secretaria General y Presidenta del Partido Comunista de España. Primera mujer presidenta de un partido en España, fue una mujer revolucionaria. Falleció en 1985 con 94 años. El poeta español Miguel Hernández en su poema “Pasionaria” escribió: “Naciste para dar dirección a los vientos”. La foto está muy bien y no tenía conocimiento que tuviera esa escultura en Glasgow.
