Woolworths, High Street, Dumbarton

I miss Woolies very much Joe! I wish I had taken a picture of the one in Yeovil. So many more High Street names gone since though! :-(

Thanks, Rosa. I miss Woolies too. The last thing I bought in here was a pair of scissors that are next to me on my desk at the moment. They are still going strong.

This shop is now the local Wetherspoon pub called 'The Captain James Lang', in which I haven't spent a penny! In between, it was a 'Spar' supermarket, which I did visit a couple of times.

It looks rather sad and empty in the flickr link :-( It used to be so busy and bustling. I bought my first ever bathing costume in there and loved it! I have saucepans still going strong and probably have also bought scissors there! I think it is now Primark in Yeovil, but I haven't been to the town for so long, that I don't quite remember!! Ah. The same economic downturn that kicked me out and got me to start afresh with a totally different (and miles better) career path, ie. teaching English in a foreign clime! (tons better than financial services!)

I had a career change too, Andy. I left the whisky industry to retrain as an IT Officer. It was a great move for me. All the best, Joe

I remember they always had a great bargain books bin. I discovered a copy of A Samuel Beckett Reader, edited by John Calder, a Signet classic, in Woolworths in Mexborough. That and the Pic ‘n’ Mix, you couldn’t complain. But you try and tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya'.

I used my local 'Woolies', Steve, for stocking up on pencils, sharpeners and erasers, when it was time to go back to school. Thanks for your great comment. All the best, Joe

Woolies was a big part of my childhood. I remember saving up pennies and halfpennies to collect the colourful plastic bambis, after I had seen Bambi in the late 40s. I wish I still had one to remind me. Our local Woolies in Shrewsbury is now an H&M fashion store.
