Before there were fountains etc in the square, it was the gathering place for Hogmany revellers, before they went first footing. Dundee dressed herring could be bought in the streets nearby. The “dress” was literal, usually a crepe paper skirt and bonnet and was taken on the first footing trips. I remember this well, and we used to go from the Caird Hall square up to Barnhill and Broughty Ferry to visit my Mum's sisters and their families. What fun! I liked the blackcurrant cordial.
