The essential belongings

The essential belongings
Contribution for The 50 Images-Project: Still Life 8/50

If you are very rich, you don't need any. If you are very poor, you don't have many.

Ever noticed what you check through somewhat every time you go out, and miss if you have forgotten any of them at home: wallet, keys and the mobile phone. But if you were very rich, you would have servants to take care all of them for you. And if you were very poor, you would have no home or car to carry keys for, no money to buy much of anything, and no phone to contact anyone.

True... and when you are not rich nor poor you have to care about your keys, your smartphone, your wallet, your ID documents...

Exactly my point ;-)

And I think forgetting the keys can turn out the most dramatic! I have had several cases in my life because of forgetting my keys inside. Nowadays we may have at least a mobile phone with us, to call for a help, but before the mobile phone era one had to seek for a phone and maybe even coins to call for a help.

As I live alone I have a hint: when I come in I lock my door from inside and take the keys off (in case something happens to me like falling in my staircase -appartment is a duplex- so it can be opened from outside). To go out I am obliged to take my keys to open, and I put them right away in the outside keyhole in order to close door or in my pocket if I have many things to carry out before closing. Till now it never failed...

Here in Finland the doors get locked when closed. No need to use keys to lock them. Long time ago I learned to attach my keys to the trouser's belt loop with a carabiner. But then there is always a risk of error when changing the trousers... =D

Yes, I also always lock from the inside to keep me from running out and forgetting the key;-)

And put a nail at the door frame and another one on the door so you attach keys to both sides... what obliges you to take the keys out before opening??? Or something that makes noise when you open and you program your brain to: noise = picking keys?

"Or something that makes noise when you open and you program your brain to: noise = picking keys?"

That could work! =) But yes, I have somewhat programmed my brains already. Nowadays I check my keys somewhat every time, no matter what door I am going through. And sometimes vise versa, I reach for my keys also when going inside, almost at every main door. =D

I am a bit slow, and took awhile to figure that out, but yes, another great idea!

Nice collage, Sami! I love the macro detail of the keys and coins...very tactile! And I also liked what you had to say. Too true. :)

Great job!
And a nice text to the picture!
I remeber when visiting friends in the near of Jyväskylä that they never closed the door. It was always open! Except when they went out for a few days or over the weekend. :-)

Yes, in Finland that is more or less the case in small villages and countryside still. Finns are sometimes even foolishly trustful!

An other Finnish habit (maybe used also elsewhere) is to put broom leaning against the door to signal that the residents are out.

great text and illustration, Sami: for me, on leaving the house, I always think of four things not to forget: keys, wallet, phone and reading glasses...

Well yes, I am myopic. So, I can't get even that far without noticing it! =D
