St. Michael's Church on the central plaza Michaelerplatz in Vienna was built between 1219 and 1221 by the Babenberg Duke Leopold VI and is one of the oldest churches in Vienna. St. Michael's Church is one of the few Romanesque buildings in Vienna. However, some elements were later rebuilt in Baroque or Classicist style. The church is dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The church is best known for the Michaelergruft (St Michael's Crypt), in which some corpses were not decomposed but mummified due to special climatic characteristics.
