The Orangery ~ Montacute House

The Orangery ~ Montacute House
The Orangery at Montacute House - The timber and glass roof of the orangery, which was added to the property in the 1840s, had fallen in under the weight of snow in 2012. A National Trust spokesman said the roof restoration presented a "huge jigsaw puzzle" because 2,380 glass panes all had to be refitted. The work cost £10,000, which was raised via a raffle. The glass panes were recorded and carefully removed and the roof dismantled, all done in sight of visitors who were able to climb to a platform on the scaffolding and see the work being carried out. The orangery was originally used to cover winter orange trees which spent the summer on the terrace by the house. Before it reopened, the building was repopulated with various plants.

Admirable et belle histoire de cette orangerie remise à niveau par les travaux de restauration de ce toit et surtout du nombre impressionnant de vitres à changer.
Vos rendus sont d'une extrême beauté.

What an interesting story of this fine Victorian orangerie dear Rosa! Fortunately the roof has been restored and the second image shows it looks great and that the plants inside are beautiful, too.
Two lovely images of this charming place and a happy ending story! ;-)

Such an attractive looking building................and a lovely narrative. I like the idea of the public being able to watch the restoration.

The interior looks amazing, especially when looking at the larger image using the PiP. The tree fern is gorgeous and I like the "living wall" on the left hand side.

Two wonderful images, beautifully captured..........excellent work Rosa!

Thank you Keith. Yes, I wish I had known at the time. It would have been interesting to see them at work on the roof.

The inside was lovely Keith. My photo doesn't do it justice. The living wall was amazing.

A 'proper' greenhouse !! they must have been fantastically expensive to heat, the NT ones I have seen all seem to have similar plants no oranges !!! Although the one at Calke is a state of preserved decay they had to rebuild the glass dome. The rain didn't amount to much barely enough to damp the slabs my weeds need a good soaking! have a pleasant evening Rosalyn

There are plans to reinstate the orange trees, I am told Peter.
Very little rain down here, and still quite warm.

Quite an undertaking this restoration, especially all those glass panes. Judging from your fine photographs those involved have done a wonderful job Rosa. I like the light on the end of the building and being able to see through the glass to similar light on the trees to the rear. Your interior shot gives a nice sense of scale and is very nicely framed.
