The cheese scones were probably the best I have ever bought Nick. Wincanton has a lovely selection of individual shops, and you should see the queues at the butchers every Saturday!

The scones were delicious with a little butter and pickle Peter. I already had enough carrots :)
Quite nice weather here, but starting to get cold now (3.15pm) brrrr!

Six shillings for a scone Rosalyn, Really !! I can remember going into the bakers at 4 o clock in the afternoon and asking for threepence worth of stale cakes and getting a bag full. It was a shop not unlike the one in your photograph but in Kent.

Well, when you convert it, it doesn't sound so good Maurice. I only earnt £18 a week in 1970 though :)

Haha, I couldn't walk past this one without going inside Nouchet!

I love towns with lots of independent and what I would call "traditional" shops - so much more attractive and interesting than the big chains etc., and very photogenic too.

The delicatessen looks very inviting and warm and the window display is very nice. I would definitely have popped in there for a look-see (and possibly a cake or three).

I love the "eat more carrots" sign.........it's so delightfully old-fashioned looking, as is that charming fruit and veg shop. I like the green elephants :-)

So do I Keith, and Wincanton has lost some over the years but in recent years we have also had some new independent stores. Sadly one shop that we lost a couple of years ago was a shoe shop that served us well for years.

The deli is really good and you would have found one or three delicious cakes there. I was almost tempted by a Viennese whirl, but stayed with the cheese scone ;-))
