St Leonard's ~ Sutton Veny

St Leonard's ~ Sutton Veny
Old St Leonard's was abandoned in the 1860s when a new church was built. It is now partially ruined and only the chancel (previously used as a mortuary chapel) still has its roof. The chancel contains some interesting artefacts including benefaction boards, a bier, font, bell and many elegant memorials on the walls.

Thank you George. Yes, I agree with your comment. The ground is very wet and I think it was a case of move before it falls down!

A nice series Rosalyn and great place for photo opportunities , the ruins would make some lovely settings for people photography , not something I do other than the odd candid shot. Do you know anything about the enclosed grave ? I've not seen one like that. It's sunny at the moment but some very heavy showers around, enjoy the rest of your day

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
I think you're right Peter. Not something I do either, but can imagine nice wedding photos on the site. I couldn't read the inscription on the grave unfortunately. They certainly didn't want them to escape!! I'm looking after Sophie tomorrow, so will have to see what the weather is like before we decide what to get up to.

An interesting and photogenic set of ruins Rosa. I like the archway in the main image, it seems to have stood the test of time well and it probably had a very impressive door at one time!

The interior is quite lovely............and you've exposed the image perfectly. Some interesting stuff there. I wonder if it's ever used?

You've captured the other ruins in super detail and lovely light. I'm intrigued by that strange contraption over the the grave...........it looks a bit like a toast-rack :-))

I hope you had a good weekend and are enjoying the cooler weather. We had a lot of rain last night and up until mid morning, but from then on it's been lovely and sunny. More rain in the forecast though. Take care and have a good week.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
It is a very atmospheric site Keith, down a quiet lane and with a view of the Wylye Valley beyond. It's a shame it was built on such soft ground, although it did last a very long time! It was the first time I had been inside and found it really interesting with some very sad memorial plaques on the walls. I don't think it is used anymore, but it is well cared for.

Ha ha, the contraption over the grave does look like a toast rack!! They certainly didn't want them to escape that's for sure!

I am enjoying the cooler weather, yet miss the blue sky. I have a busy week taking care of Sophie, travelling down to Yeovil on 3 days. I'm sure it will be fun :-))
Take care yourself and enjoy the new week.

A great composition, Rosa. I love the way the shadow acts as a lead-in line and draws the eye through the archway. Cheers, Joe

A very nice set of pictures, which I like very much. Nice information too!

Wonderful composition to include the shape of the shadow in the main picture, so simple and effective!!!

I like the little fence over the grave too!!
