My mother, enjoying a brandy with an old family friend. c. 1959

My mother, enjoying a brandy with an old family friend. c. 1959
Submitted to the Vintage Photos Theme Park for the theme, "Clocks". The wall clock in the background appears to be creeping up on ten o'clock, brandy has been poured, cigars brought out, and there is a palpable sense of camaraderie in the expressions of the principles captured here. The gentleman, an old friend of my father's family, was an interesting character. He had worked as a porter on Pullman railroad sleeper cars, then worked his way through college and medical school and established a successful surgical practice in Milwaukee. One other notable object visible in this photo is the large, stuffed lion that my dad had only recently acquired for reasons known only to him. This photo perfectly captures my memory of my mother when I was a boy. Cheers.

Such a charming photo altogether - but a very, very sweet one of your mom.

hmm - that almost looks like Polaroid Swinger markings. Is that possible?

Thanks, Deborah. It is a Polaroid photo but not a Swinger. It was a large, heavy, bellows Polaroid 600 Camera. I think my dad bought it in 1957. It required the user to coat each photo with a liquid fixer that was provided with each roll of film. If you touched the photo before the coating had dried fingerprints would show later where the coating was removed. The fixer was very volatile and often evaporated from the container. Uncoated areas of the photos faded badly. Most of my old Polaroid photos were damaged this was.

Yes, you had to do the same thing with the much cheaper Swinger. I really loved the smell of that pink fixer! A lot of my photos had that tell-tale swipe - and a few had the finger print, too.

A lovely photo and description of your mother and family friend along with some interesting details about the room (quite a nice lion!).
