COSTWOLDS (oops, I mean COTSWOLDS) - English tea time 18

COSTWOLDS (oops, I mean COTSWOLDS) - English tea time 18
Boffin' Baffling Maths

Fosse Farmhouse B&B, near Castle Combe.

First the instructions, then the actual perfect scone.

Not to mention tea served correctly! Milk first then tea on top. Done that way because otherwise the tea will stain the porcelain. Says the owner of the bed & breakfast.

The little lion's head is from the Romans - found on the site of the bed & breakfast.

Thank you so much. I rarely do them, but being in that space it was intense (in a good way) and the display called to me to take this.

Well, that is what the host said was the "correct" way to do it. I'd never heard of it before!

First the milk, then tea on top may protect the porcelain from staining, but probably not the teeth. ;))
Anyway, I like the English tea ceremony as much as the Japanese, for example, with everything that goes with it. And I love this photo with the beautiful details and your description of it.

haha - yes, I'm sure you are right, teeth love to hold tea stain.

So glad this photo pleases you. It certainly brings back good memories for me - I can almost taste that scone again!

Excellent photo and makes me want to go back to England again. We do have plans for 2026 and probably Paris as well, which, if it happens, will give us opportunity to see Notre-
Dame. We discovered in France the majority of the churches are Notre-Dames.

Thank you, really glad you like it.

I would travel a lot if I could handle planes better - and back to England will be the next long trip I take, but really have no idea when. I always want to travel all over Britain and Europe when ever I make it across basically half the earth - but there's never enough time.
Ah Notre-Dame! It would be thrilling to see it in its newly cleaned state. I got to see it back in 2003.
And yes, I do believe I knew that about many of the churches in France. Paris's Notre-Dame is simply the Dame of all Dames *smile*

Thank you, Joe. It was nice that the roman lion head had the same color tone as the table setting.

The "outdated", yet still elegant hues of this tea set, as well as the rest of a tasty cake add to your description and to the truth of your picture, Laura.
I love this English tradition (as much as the Japanese one) and the subjectivity through which you portray it.

Wonderful still photo with good framing and a warm and calm mood. The jam, the slightly cracked lion biscuit - enjoyable.
And I understand that you have still a good rememberance - I think fragrance and the taste is a memory booster.

The traditional tea ceremony in Frisia (North of Germany & Netherlands) is a bit different. Place rock candy in a thin cup, then pour hot tea in and hear the candy crackle, and lastly let drops of milk sink in that build clouds (woelkje) in the tea. Don't stir.

I do like the different tea ceremonies (and also different coffee preparations) from all over the world - take your time and appreciate the enjoyment.

Thank you very much. I'm really glad you like the photo. I don't often take still life type photos, but am quite happy with this one.

I'm very interested in rituals around food especially. Love your description of Frisia tradition (and I didn't know that area was a region called Frisia - love learning that). That tradition certainly has a different feel to it than the english one!

Do note that the lion's head is not a biscuit at all (though definitely looks like one), but an actual dug up artifact from along the roman road that the place is built.

Costwolds is a nice letter turner - Cotswolds is a highly expensive region to live.

Have a wonderful Christmas and may it be filled with your favorite things and the people you love.

A well put together still-life image Laura...........it works beautifully. I like the muted colour palette and the vintage look of the image ⭐️

Personally, I'm more of a mug of tea person.........chuck in a tea bag and add milk afterwards. Yes, I know.................common as muck :-)))

raingirl club has replied to Keith Burton club
Glad you like this one. I rarely do still life, so I was happy this one came out well.

I admit I usually use a mug for tea also. I find it keeps the tea warmer longer. But if I'm "having tea", then I love a good tea cup! I'll make a pot of tea and just pour a small amount of tea at a time. As long as we are enjoying the tea I don't think it really matters which way we go about it.

Nice porcelain! The habit of having tea in the afternoon was introduced in England in the 17th century by Queen Catarina (the Portuguese wife of King Charles II). She felt lonely in the court and invited daily the ladies of the court to have tea; thus she could talk and socialize with them. This soon became a general habit in the United Kingdom and a tradition.
