Kalanchoe

This is an education for me! I would never...not ever...have thought of these as being Kalanchoe. A plant I know as a small succulent with an abundance of tightly knit miniature scarlet flowers. Which I used to grow as a house plant.

Actually this kalanchoe is one of the "mother of thousands" that makes babies along the edges of its leaves which readily drop off to form new plants (although I think your scarlet flowered one is also capable of doing this when stressed). Many folks have the "mothers" as novelty house plants but they don't often bloom, except for me, at least, when in a greenhouse. They are extremely succulent and durable plants. In fact, I think they actually thrive on neglect. If pulled up or broken off, they can often survive for more than a year without being replanted an dwill produce babies from its leaves more furiously than ever. Plus as soon as a stem touches dirt, it will re-root almost anywhere along its stalk. Many people with succulent greenhouses consider them a pest. Keeping them out of pots and my in-ground growing area, is a never ending task, but after seeing how pretty the flowers are, I always let a few grow in the gravel on the floor. There, the plants can get quite large with flower stalks 2 to 3 feet long.
