The Ouse valley from Newhaven to Lewes - 25.6.2012

Newhaven town & country

Folder: Seaford, Bishopstone & Newhaven
Newhaven is a small ferry port on the south coast of England, about 10 miles east of Brighton. The port and ferry service are heavily subsidized by the French local authorities in Dieppe - at the other end of the four-hour ferry crossing. It has the potential to be a pleasant resort at the mouth of the Sussex Ouse. Much of its industry has now gone, but it always seems to miss out when redevelopme…  (read more)

WD Mersey leaving Newhaven Harbour - 17.2.2012

Photographed from the Newhaven Swing Bridge. WD Mersey is a dredger that was keeping the harbour approaches deep enough for the ferries, that travel to Dieppe a couple of times a day.

MV Helen loading waste at North Quay - Newhaven -…

18 Jun 2011 2 303
There used to be regular collections of commercial waste (as opposed to domestic waste, which goes into the incinerator) from this wharf. Then there was a fire in one of the large storage sheds, which took almost a week to extinguish. Since then the traffic seems to have almost vanished, although a new shed has been built. The scrap metal shipments from the other end of the harbour, at South Quay, don't seem to keep up with the deliveries that come in by road. The heaps of metal seem to be growing, although there is nearly always a freighter, in port, loading.

I am not sure that the catamaran ferries were actually operating at that point. They certainly did not run in 2010 or 2011. The Transmanche Newhaven - Dieppe ferries, MV Seven Sisters and MV Cote d'Albatre, run from the neighbouring berth, with two sailings a day in the summer and a reduced service in the winter.

Marine is used as sidings for trains terminating at Newhaven Harbour. I am told that there is often a set stabled here overnight. Apologies to all those who were too polite to point out that I had called this 'Maritime' not 'Marine'. Allegedly this use of Newhaven Marine is twofold - It is a 'Parliamentary' train, avoiding the need to declare the station closed, and is for route learning for drivers, in case the single line to Seaford is out of action and Marine is needed for holding trains terminating at Newhaven. Mind the Parliamentary train bit doesn't hold water as the public cannot travel into Marine.

Newhaven from Denton Island 15 3 10

A digital daubing. I have no idea whose responsibility this wreck is. It has obviously been a house boat at some point. To get it out - if it is water tight - it would have to be towed all the way round Denton Island, as the clearance under the bridge is too tight. As it is it is an eye-sore; more because of the junk stacked on its deck than the boat itself.

Sospan Dau suction dredger Seaford 10.10.10

Seaford's beach has only one large breakwater, at its eastern end. The shingle beach has to be reprofiled each year, mainly by bucket loaders, large tipper trucks and bull-dozers. On this occasion a dredger was employed to suck shingle from the seabed and pump it out on to the beach.
