Photographs and other material dating from WW2. My mother worked in the Civil Service just off Whitehall in Central London, throughout the war. At night she and her colleagues carried out fire watching duties on the roof of her office building. They were equipped with sand bags and stirrup pumps to put out incendiary bombs. Her brother, her uncle and brother-in-law were in the armed forces.

I find it curious that the panel at the eastern end shows the stations at the outer end of the District Line, but also includes places like Grays, Tilbury and Southend that weren't on the District Line or in fact on the Underground. Places in similar relationships to the Underground network, but in other directions don't get mentioned.
