Tall pillbox on East of Cuckmere Haven 28 7 2009
I believe that this pill-box fortification was cast on-site. This series of Cuckmere fortifications photos was uploaded to provide some visual information for a railway modeller who is creating a fictional branch line along the valley.

SV1XV, Annemarie, Don Sutherland, Agathe Beitz and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

An excellent series, Phil. I have always been struck by the survival of so many WWII installations etc. in England. I remembers a bomb site in the city that wasn't built on till the 1980s (I verified it was a bombsite). Stunning evidence of the scope of WWII.

This valley has important Canadian history. During WW2 it was used as a training ground for Canadian troops preparing for the landings in France.
There is a small cairn memorial near the former Coastguard cottages which commemorates an event involving the Canadian troops. There does seem to be some mystery about the authenticity of the story it tells. www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/25919851/in/album/515827

That's interesting. Thanks, Phil. I see the Cuckmere Haven SOS site doesn't mention any raid in its piece about the Canadians there during the war, even though the attack is supposed to have happened two days after the Canadians arrived. And the Allies didn't cover up attacks like that.
