The Wish Tower is the name given to the tower at the top of the mound. It is number 73 of a series of circular Martello Towers, built in the Napoleonic wars as a first line of defence in case of invasion by the French. The name 'Wish' seems to have been a variation of Wash - or coastal marshland, which surrounded the area at that time. Most of Eastbourne is of Victorian or later vintage. The Wish Tower is now looked after by a 'Friends' organisation who hold occasional events there.
Martello 74 is the Seaford tower, now used as the town's museum.
