HFF all. I hope you are all keeping well and that those of you having a Bank Holiday this weekend have a good time with safe celebrations.

I guess so, but looking at photos of the scene it looks as if military air-sea rescue choppers were the main evacuation craft used.

Imagine having to go out in such a boat, hats off to all who did! Belated HFF, Phil!

HFF Gudrun even more belatedly!
Until 1922 the lifeboat on this station was powered by oars and sail. They must have been incredibly tough as well as brave.

Hi Phil

A very nice picture, and great respect to those guys who go out in these boats.

Best Wishes, (slightly late) HFF, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!

Hi Peter, In some places there have been generations of the same families in the crews and most of them are unpaid volunteers.
I hope your weekend is going well.
Best wishes
Phil

Brings back memories from my involvement with repair and renovation projects on the many historic buildings of the dockyard Phil; nice image.

Thank you Roger. We started to visit in 1988 and went several more times while we still lived in south London. Now it is easier to travel along the south coast to Portsmouth, as we travel by rail. Chatham certainly has more distinctive historic buildings within the dockyard, although there are plenty to see in the surrounding area.
