The i360 is an observation pod which rises 140m above the Promenade in Brighton. It was designed by Marks Barfield Architects, the group which was also responsible for the London Eye.
It's fair to say that the City Council have not received the return on the investment which they expected. However, with a 25-minute trip costing most of us £16.50, its hardly surprising.

Why anyone thought that it would be a financial success is beyond me. Brighton does not have the sort of landmarks that surround the London Eye. Out to sea is the Rampion wind farm - OK but once you have seen one turbine you have seen them all - more-or-less. The Palace Pier is not that palatial to look at. Inland there is only really the Royal Pavilion with its onion domes and the South Downs beyond the city. Both are seen much better from ground-level.
The coast is fairly straight with chalk cliffs to the east. To the west it is flat, with a string of smaller resorts, once you get past industrial Portslade and Shoreham's relatively small commercial harbour. In the far distance you can see the Isle of Wight, 50 miles away. Why they thought it would attract more visitors is a mystery. I suppose the novelty value of a ride might be worth £16+ to some, but I prefer the Volk's Electric Railway running along the beach!
