I see this a lot in the mountains around the town where I was born and raised in the Northern Veneto region. Tired of eking out a living in a difficult environment, even incentivised by the government to get rid of their small herds of milk cows, over the years more and more people abandoned their marginally productive farms and moved to towns. So no one mowed the grass in the meadows any more, the woods were left to themselves and Nature began the slow work of taking back what was once hers anyways.
