I know I have Viking ancestry and visited Meppel as it's one of a few places in the right area that could be where my ancestor came from.

Since my surname could mean "home of Mep" [Stead meaning; Noun ; obsolete · A place where a person normally rests; a seat. [10th–18th c.] ; obsolete · An estate, a property with its grounds; a farm; a homestead. Wiktionary] - it's a possibility.

I like this picture Maggie and very interesting narrative. You must have been able to go a long way back to find your Viking roots! It's something that I am very interested in. My daughter and I have been tracing our ancestry, with some astonishing results!

It's a cheat really - my late brother Peter had Dupuytren's contracture, the gene for which has been traced back to a Viking - ergo we have Viking ancestry. Unfortunately it means I share an ancestor with the infamous Maggie :-((

I've done a bit of tracing back but have got stuck in the mid 17th century
