Old Workhorse (Lathe)

Old Workhorse (Lathe)
TSC - The Sunday Challenge March 6th. - Something which grows

Growing a workpiece by removing material ... or a growing heap of chips - B&W in the cam (which I hate, because it removes a lot of information from the photo. I perfer to do B&W off cam.)

, , .t.a.o.n., Annemarie and 38 other people have particularly liked this photo

Well, for an amateur like me this is still a good black and white. I would need an example to see the difference ;-)

Problem is, that the tonal values of the color information are gone.

My camera allows me to shoot JPEG and raw at the same time and saves each. When I use the art filters it saves a JPEG and a raw. When I use the B&W feature it saves it in both formats. The B&W setting gives me an idea of the tonal range and I can use the raw for B&W or for anything else I want to do. I agree with others however, I think this came out just fine.
LutzP club has replied to Bruce Dean (Puchinpa… club
Hmmm, it never entered my mind, that there is an RAW as well if I shoot BW (because I never do it) and RAW is RAW, it must have all information. I always shoot a full resolution RAW and a smaller jpg. I just did a quick test with my 70D. Amazingly Lightroom shows the RAW image also also BW in the library view but once you open development the colors are back. Something learned which should have been obvious. Thanks for your comment!

Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to LutzP club
I was thinking this as well, that there must be an option on Canon D series cameras to keep the original. And there is, an option to keep also the JPEG untouched: www.dummies.com/how-to/content/using-creative-filters-on-a-canon-eos-70d.html

So, either one choose the "creative filter" in advance, before shooting, or use them afterwards to edit the images on camera. In latter way the original (RAW or JPEG) stays unedited, and a copy of that is made for editing on camera.
LutzP club has replied to Sami Serola (inactiv… club
You are right Sami, it's all there, however, I never use it. And as to BW, why should I. doing that in LR is much more comfortable and flexible. But at least we (I) learned, that the tonal values are not lost and there can always be a RAW to save all information. Hey, thanks again for the heads up.
Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to LutzP club
Yes, I agree, pretty much useless for everyday use, and merely only as things as "good to know" or "useless information" =D

Only situation where I have used these creative filters have been when I have in purpose tried to find what they could be good for, or when I have had nothing better to do (sitting in train or bus, or waiting my turn in the queue) =)

I almost never make a b/w straight from the camera, I decide on the computer if it works better in b/w or color, what fits the idea the best. B/W often simplifies the idea, makes it more clear. Anyhow for me. But you got a very nice b/w, I like those old machines.
LutzP club has replied to Wierd Folkersma club
Thanks Wierd, so we agree on this one. It has actually never entered my mind to do BW inside the cam, dame as RAW development. What's the benefit?
