Edouard Manet Standing Drawing by Degas in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, December 2023
Title: Édouard Manet Standing
Artist: Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834–1917 Paris)
Date: ca. 1868
Geography: Country of Origin France
Culture: French
Medium: Graphite and ink wash
Dimensions: 13 3/4 × 7 7/8 in. (35 × 20 cm)
Framed: 21 5/8 × 16 3/4 × 13/16 in. (55 × 42.5 × 2 cm)
Classification: Drawings
Credit Line: Musée d'Orsay, Paris (RF 41651)
Among the ten drawings that Degas made of Manet at the height of their friendship, around 1868, this work is distinct in its technique. Degas rarely used ink wash, especially in this period, whereas Manet frequently worked in the medium. It seems, therefore, that Degas adopted it here with his friend in mind. He later gave this work and several others to Manet’s niece Julie on the occasion of her marriage.
