Manet exhibited an impression of this etching at the Salon des Refusés in May 1863. It reproduces Lola de Valence, on view in the next gallery, preserving the neutral background of the painting as it initially appeared. Later that year, he published the work as part of Eaux-fortes modernes (Modern Etchings), a series distributed to subscribers by the Société des Aquafortistes (Society of Etchers). Manet was a founding member of the group, which was established in 1862 by the art dealer and publisher Alfred Cadart in collaboration with the printer Auguste Delâtre to further interest in etching among artists, critics, collectors, and the general public.
