Corinthian Kotyle in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, June 2018
Kotyle (Deep Wine Cup) (Primary Title)
Unknown (Artist)
Date: Second quarter of the 7th century BC
Culture: Greek (Protocorinthian)
Category: Ceramics
Containers-Vessels
Medium: terracotta
Collection: Ancient Art
Dimensions: Overall (at handles): 3 3/8 × 5 5/8 in. (8.57 × 14.29 cm)
Object Number: 80.27
In the 7th century, Greek artists began to experiment with depicting stories. The figures on this cup appear to be an unusual combination of a human (hunting a boar) and a hero (shooting at a centaur, a half-human, half-horse creature). The hero may be Herakles, who is shown pursuing the centaur Nessos in later Greek art. The black rays on the lower body and floral motifs on the central band derive from imported Near Eastern goods.
