Head of a Male Figure in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, August 2008

Head of a Male Figure in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, August 2008
Head of a Male Figure
Kushano-Sasanian period, Gandhara region
4th-5th century AD
Terracotta

Accession # 1974.210

This head, originally formed over a wood and reed-bundle core, may have been part of a statue in a Buddhist shrine. The modeling finds parallels in stucco sculptures from the Buddhist center of Hadda, where a school of Gandharan art flourished, characterized by great expressiveness.

Text from the Metropolitan Museum of Art label.
