Fragments of a Terracotta Relief with a Rider Leading a Horse in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, July 2007

Fragments of a Terracotta Relief with a Rider Leading a Horse in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, July 2007
Fragments of a terracotta relief of a rider leading a horse.
Greek, Sicilian, 6th century BC

Accession # 24.97.1a,b

The youth rides one horse, whose head is missing, and leads another by the bridle. The remains of a thumb on the boy's hair indicates that the relief included a second figure. The scene might have represented Troilos, a young Trojan prince who was ambushed and killed by the Greek hero Achilles as he led horses to water.
