Group Statuette of Two Men and a Boy in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, May 2010

Group Statuette of Two Men and a Boy in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, May 2010
Group Statuette of Two Men and a Boy
Dynasty 18, reign of Akhenaten, ca. 1353-1336 BC
Painted limestone

Accession # 11.150.21

This statuette is one of the few nonroyal examples that are stylistically datable to the Amarna period. The sculptor seems to have been influenced by the prominence of the royal family in the art of the period and, looking back to the example of Old and Middle Kingdom groupings, created this idiosyncratic and highly appealing triad. It is difficult to decide which of the adult males might be the focal figure; each has been given marks of distinction.
