Relief Fragment: Relief Depicting the Nurse Tia in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, November 2010
Relief Depicting the Nurse Tia

Period: New Kingdom, Amarna Period

Dynasty: Dynasty 18 Reign: reign of Akhenaten

Date: ca. 1353–1336 B.C.

Geography: Egypt, Middle Egypt, el-Amarna probably; Hermopolis possibly

Medium: Limestone, paint

Dimensions: h. 23.1 cm (9 1/8 in); w. 54 cm (21 1/4 in); th. 3.7 cm (1 7/16 in)

Credit Line: Gift of Norbert Schimmel, 1985

Accession Number: 1985.328.5

Description:

The large figure of the king, at the left, and the smaller figure of a young woman offering bread loaves appear to be participating in two different scenes. The sidelock of hair would usually identify the girl as a princess, but here, the inscription behind her reads "the nurse of the king's daughter Ankhesenpaaten, Tia," and it seems likely that this is a representation of the nurse.
