Marble Portrait of a Middle-Aged Woman in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, November 2009

Marble Portrait of a Middle-Aged Woman in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, November 2009
Marble Portrait of a Middle-Aged Woman
Probably from Sardinia
ca. 10-20 AD

# MS 4919

The Roman ideal of the modest woman with strength of character is expressed clearly in this powerful, individualized portrait of an unidentified female. The close dating of the sculpture comes from a comparison of the hair style with that on representations of Livia and Julia, the wife and daughter of Augustus.

Text from the U. Penn. Museum label.
