Funeral Stele of Aurelia Artemis in the Walters Art Museum, September 2009
Funerary Stele of Aurelia Artemis
Creator: Egyptian (Artist)
Period: 3rd-4th century (Late Antique)
Medium: marble, plaster ground, and paint (Sculpture)
Accession Number: 26.2
Measurements: H: 13 3/8 x W: 16 1/4 in. (34 x 41.2 cm)
Geography: Akhmim, Egypt (Place of Discovery)
This stele (tombstone) commemorates the death of a woman named Aurelia Artemis. The use of costly, imported marble and the woman's elaborate dress suggest that she came from a wealthy family. The presence of a Greek inscription, as well as the woman's pose, point to a Greek family, possibly Christian, living in southern Egypt.
