Greek, made in Taras, South Italy, 320-300 BC
Limestone

Inventory # 96.AA.121

Lion's-head waterspouts were common elements on fountains, which supplied water to ancient communities. In this sculptural fragment, two women stand next to a fountain with such a spout. Fountains were among the few public places where women could meet and talk.
