According to A Geoffery Manning's "Compendium of the Place Names of South Australia" Moongi is aboriginal for ‘a good place’. The town, situated 8 km NW of Buckleboo, was proclaimed on 17 March 1932. Moongi Conservation Reserve was dedicated in 1987 and includes the site of the former town (see: www.slsa.sa.gov.au/digitalpubs/placenamesofsouthaustralia )

I find these places heart-achingly sad.
I sure appreciate the effort and industry of the Europeans, but it seems that the only aboriginal presence is in the names ... and rarely any actual recognition.
Am beginning to learn what I can from early newspaper reports, through Trove.
It's pretty grim reading.

Yes, there is a richness in the large number of aboriginal place names scattered all through the South Australian countryside, but when you ponder some more you realise how little that is compared to all that lay behind behind those names which has mostly disappeared without trace.
