I have no idea what this is!

It's made of very well turned and polished wood, about 2 inches (5cm) tall and very tactile. I can't think of any practical purpose for it, but it's very nice to look at. My wife found it whilst clearing about a box of bits and bobs but neither of us can remember where it came from :-)

Diane Putnam, Gudrun, Diana Australis, Rosalyn Hilborne and 11 other people have particularly liked this photo

its anyway a beautiful object

may be a piece of a curtain stick?

Glad you like it Annemarie.

I don't think it's part of a curtain pole...........the bottom is unmarked and as well finished as the rest............and it would be far to small.

Ik dacht ook meteen aan een stuk van een gordijnstang, belangrijk is een gat of schroefdraad in de voet .
hartelijke groeten......

Beautiful light on this anonymous object Keith, I do hope someone can solve the mystery of it's origin.

Thanks Roger. I suspect that it's purely decorative, or maybe a wood-turner's demonstration piece.

I thought that at first Jean (I can remember having to darn my own socks when I first joined the RN), but I don't think it is. The top is very small - only around 3cm in diameter and as you say, quite pointy. This image shows it at about two and a half times life size!

I agree though, that it's very beautiful and lovely to hold and look at. Glad you like it too.

I tried that after reading this Wilhelm..............but it's so light that it doesn't work. Thanks for commenting though.

Possibly...........but I think it's too big. Glad you like the shot thought mate! I hope you and yours are safe and well.

I would say, it's a tool for darning! On the other hand these tools are rounded and have no peak.
Great details and I like the colors!

Thanks Berny but Jean (above) has also said that...............so see my reply. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for all your helpful comments folks.............I doubt I'll ever know for sure what it is - but that doesn't really matter :-)

Oh yes it's definitely a thingummyjig Keith! ;-) I think it is too pointed for a darning mushroom. My late mother-in-law had many but then she did have 11 children! Still a mystery then. Let us know if you solve it!

P.S. Could it be something to do with spinning, as in cotton/wool spinning wheels?

Thanks for commenting Rosa............but the mystery remains.

My first thought also was a darning help but the point is a bit sharp. Whatever it is, it's beautifully turned and you photographed it perfectly with a matching background.

Thanks for joining in the speculation Gudrun and I'm glad you like the photo. I suspect it's probably just a display piece made by a wood-turner!

Game piece? Finial? Miniature lamp? I agree, to pointy for a darning bulb. You've gotten it to pose very nicely, Keith! ;-)
