Small Town

Small Town
This week in SSC:

Tilt Shift Photography - "A process that uses selective focus to produce an illusion of a scene to look like a miniature."

I've never tried this before. It was fun finding the right type of scene for this challenge. This was taken from the 4th floor of a parking garage right before a downpour. I used "Fotor" online editor for the "Tilt Shift" effect which was pretty handy. I think I'll enjoy playing around with this in the future.

This is the "small town" of Bremerton, Washington featuring the "Roxy Theater" sign which belongs to one of the town's two theaters that have been here since the 1940s. I can't even guess how many times I went to this theater as a kid. Lots of good memories here.

...and for Sight and Sound:

Hal Ketchum from his album "Past the Point of Rescue" (1991)

Thanks, Val. I added a little saturation but it was a pretty scene anyway. :))

'Fotor' worked far better than Pic Monkey for this challenge, Karen, but you also chose a good vantage point. I didn't go high enough.

Thank you, Amelia. I read that a 45 degree angle was best so I wanted to get up high.

This has worked a treat, Karen. Definitely a very well chosen viewpoint. I think it was a good idea to increase the saturation a bit. I don't know why but it seems to me that when the saturation is increased the miniature effect is enhanced :-) A spot-on musical match. It is a little bit spooky because for some while I have had this video on a shortlist waiting for the right photo :-) Hal's "Sure Love" is also on the shortlist :-) Hal Ketchum is one of my all-time favourite artists. I have most of his albums. I don't know if I have said this before but very, very many moons ago we had tickets to see Hal 'Live in Concert' but sadly he was taken ill and the concert was cancelled. I know Hal has suffered a number of health issues over the years but a few months ago I was devastated to read that Hal was no longer able to tour because he is now suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Such a cruel world!

Thank you, Karen, for posting to Sight and Sound : Pictures & Music

Thanks so much, Roger. I think the over saturation must be common in miniature sets maybe? :)

Oh, that is so sad to read about Hal. I know he had a lot of back problems and had gained a lot of weight but I didn't know about the other problems. SO sad for such a neat guy. :(

Hi Karen,

It certainly does look like you met the objective of making it look like a miniature village! Excellent view point, and certainly enhancing the colour worked, which in its own right makes a pretty picture!
Of course I remember Roxy Music.. Still have their first LP on vinyl... saw them live a couple of times, but unfortunately the T-shirt hasn't survived the years! (But maybe a photo somewhere of me wearing it!)

Best wishes
Peter

Hi again Karen,
Just as a postscript, being interested in what you have done here (and keen to understand), I did a bit of reading and found a series of articles, of which this is maybe most relevant..

Thank you for the interesting article, Peter. :) Shooting from directly above or at just a slightly higher angle really can make for some great possibilities.

And I am just learning about Roxy Music this weekend. Norbert gave me some good links up above and I do like what I've heard. :)

I love small towns, especially as they are american ones (not that I would have lots of experience with small or large ones, but usually over here we only get the huge ones offerd in movie or picture) ;-)
Very well processed, I like the effect.
Just got in mind: "Make America small (therfore beautiful) again. ;-)
