Blinded by Science
I'm long overdue for adding something to my "Cool Old Photos" album. My sister gave me a bunch of old family photos that I'm having fun editing. (Original in PIP.)
This is my grandma's Chemistry Class in 1915. She's on the far right. Your guess is as good as mine as to what they were doing.

My enthusiasm for chemistry has always been very limited. I always missed a bit the action. I always thought it had to explode something or at least foam colorfully. ;-))
polytropos club has addedThat's the reason why I position my PIPs in the upper LEFT corner :)

It reminds me so much of my chemistry lessons at school, in an old building, and with equipment of this era..
As to what they were doing, well Kenny is pretty well spot on. They are making some kind of gas, and collecting it over water. I don't know how old they are, but sensibly, what do they ever make in school, hydrogen and oxygen, maybe carbon dioxide..
Since what is being heated looks dark and solid, my guess is they are making oxygen by heating solid potassium permanganate.....
Best Wishes, and a good weekend
Peter

Karen's Place club has replied to Peter_Private_Box clubWow, potassium permanganate is scary stuff. When we had koi fish in our pond we had to use that stuff to get rid of parasites and if you breathe it in powder form it can really mess you up! :-O
