Cypripedium acaule (Pink Lady's-slipper orchid)

These images were taken on part of a 6-hour adventure in the Southern Appalachians of the Carolinas. This particular spot was made known to me several years ago, and each year since, it has provided superb examples of relatively large groups of this beautiful orchid species. They are growing in open woods on a small section of north-facing, sloping forest. BTW, this is the first year that I've been able to detect their delicate, floral fragrance -- pure heaven!
